In a recent agreement between Norway and the European Union, the annual quota for shrimp in the North Sea and Skagerrak has been fixed at 4,557 metric tons for the period spanning July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025. This decision aligns closely with recommendations provided by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), as confirmed by the Norwegian government.
Decrease in Norwegian Shrimp Quota
Norway’s allocated share of the shrimp quota for this period amounts to 2,854 metric tons, marking a notable decrease of 25% compared to the previous year. This reduction reflects ongoing concerns about the sustainability and health of shrimp stocks in the designated fishing areas.
The ICES has estimated that shrimp stocks are currently hovering slightly above critically low levels. This assessment underscores the urgency of sustainable fishing practices and effective management to safeguard the future of shrimp populations in the North Sea and Skagerrak.
