Fleets operating along the coast of the Sea of Japan have commenced the shrimp season with an auspicious beginning, heralding the arrival of the coveted transparent pink shrimp, renowned as the jewel of Toyama Bay.
Impressive Haul at Shinminato Port
Reports from the local fisheries association indicate a promising start, with approximately 270 kilograms of broad velvet shrimp being unloaded as the inaugural catch at the bustling port of Shinminato on Monday.
Of particular note is the size of the shrimp harvested, some reaching lengths of up to 7 centimeters, larger than expected for this time of year. The broad velvets, distinguished for their delicate flavor and firm texture, garnered significant attention at the auction, fetching commendable prices.
Concerns Addressed
Despite initial apprehensions following the seismic activity that rattled the nearby Noto Peninsula earlier in the year, causing concerns among fishers about potential impacts on the shrimp population, the fisheries association has confirmed no disruptions to the catch.
As the shrimp season progresses, anticipation mounts for the peak months of July and August, with harvesting activities expected to continue until November, promising further opportunities for a successful haul.
