In May, operations in Uruguay’s Laguna de Castillos continue with the maintenance of shrimp traps, supporting approximately 400 jobs. The market price for shrimp remains stable at around 150 pesos (USD 3.94) per kilogram.
Harvest Volumes
A total of 129 tons of shrimp have been harvested from Laguna de Rocha and Laguna de Castillos combined. Laguna de Rocha experienced a significant increase in volume due to favorable conditions, including an opening of its bar with the Atlantic Ocean, facilitating shrimp larvae entry into the lagoon.
The shallow depth, suitable temperature, and nutrient-rich environment of Laguna de Rocha have contributed to the growth of shrimp exceeding typical capture sizes. This has resulted in strong market demand, with shrimp prices ranging from 150 to 170 pesos (USD 3.94 to 4.47) per kilogram. Workers specializing in shrimp processing earn up to 600 pesos (USD 15.76) per kilogram for their services.
Traditional Harvest in Castillos Lagoon
Laguna de Castillos, connected to the Valizas stream, remains a traditional fishing area known for its distinctively flavored but smaller-sized shrimp.
The local government in Rocha has provided support to the fishing industry by installing cooling containers and work facilities for fishermen, particularly benefiting local families and those from Cabo Polonio.
Market Stability and Regulation
The provision of on-site processing facilities and cold storage has stabilized market prices and discouraged speculation among large buyers. This ensures fair compensation for fishermen and maintains the quality of the shrimp supply chain.
