The Ministry of Agriculture, Land, and Fisheries in Trinidad and Tobago is set to launch a four-day program offering free courses in aquaculture, beginning on January 26, 2024. The initiative aims to provide the public with valuable insights into global perspectives, future trends, incentive programs, system types, feeds and feeding systems, as well as harvest and market systems.
The Ministry emphasizes that these courses will play a pivotal role in steering Trinidad and Tobago towards sustainable practices and enhanced food production. Aquaculture, defined as the cultivation of aquatic organisms such as fish, mollusks, and crustaceans, is identified as a key component in addressing global food security challenges.Highlighting the critical role of aquaculture in the context of national priorities, the Ministry states that recent statistics indicate that aquaculture contributes to over 50% of the world’s seafood.The Ministry’s free courses are strategically crafted to empower participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for responsible engagement in aquaculture practices. Facilitated by industry leaders, these sessions promise to provide valuable insights derived from experts with hands-on experience in the field.The program has received strong endorsement from the Minister of Agriculture, Land, and Fisheries, Senator Kazim Hosein. Minister Hosein emphasizes the significance of knowledge empowerment in the sustainable development of the nation. He views aquaculture not merely as a livelihood but as a pathway to ensuring food security and economic resilience.
