Spot prawns, the crown jewels of British Columbia’s seafood bounty, are back in the spotlight as Vancouver, Canada, gears up for its annual celebration of these delectable crustaceans. Renowned for their distinctive white spots adorning their tails, spot prawns are the largest shrimp species found in the waters of BC.
A Culinary Tradition: The Spot Prawn Season
Each spring, BC’s culinary scene eagerly anticipates the brief but bountiful spot prawn season. This season is marked not only by special menus featuring these coveted crustaceans but also by the highly anticipated spot prawn Festival.
The 2024 spot prawn Festival is set to take place on Sunday, May 26th, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The picturesque Fisherman’s Wharf by Granville Island in Vancouver will once again play host to this gastronomic extravaganza.
A Collaborative Effort for a Worthy Cause
Initiated in 2006, the spot prawn Festival is a collaborative effort by The Chefs’ Table Society of BC (CTS) and the Pacific Prawn Fishermen’s Association (PPFA). More than just a culinary event, the festival serves as a fundraiser to support scholarships for aspiring culinary students. Additionally, it contributes to furthering education, mentorship, and sustainability initiatives within the culinary community.
