Vietnam has solidified its position as the world’s second-largest supplier of shrimp, contributing significantly to the global shrimp industry with a share ranging from 13 percent to 14 percent of the total global value. The General Department of Fisheries, operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Vietnam, reports that the Southeast Asian nation has successfully expanded its shrimp exports to approximately 100 countries and territories worldwide.
The top five markets driving Vietnam’s shrimp export success include Europe, the United States, Japan, China, and the Republic of Korea.
Over the period spanning from 2010 to 2023, Vietnam has maintained a substantial brackish water shrimp farming area, ranging from 644,000 to 737,000 hectares.
However, recent data from Vietnam Customs for the first 10 months of the current year reveal a notable decrease in shrimp export revenue. Vietnam’s shrimp export earnings amounted to 2.8 billion U.S. dollars during this period, reflecting a 24 percent decline compared to the same timeframe in the previous year.
