In order to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices, the Vietnamese province of Quang Tri is implementing comprehensive seafood traceability initiatives. This effort aims to uphold transparency and sustainability in the region’s bustling shrimp industry.
Introducing the eCDT System
At the forefront of Quang Tri’s efforts is the implementation of an electronic seafood traceability (eCDT) system. This software revolutionizes how state authorities monitor and trace the origin of fishery products. By leveraging advanced technology, the eCDT system enables real-time tracking of fishing vessels entering and leaving ports. This capability not only enhances oversight but also expedites the issuance of essential certificates, including certificates of origin for harvested fish products.
The commitment to combat IUU fishing is further underscored by recent directives from the People’s Committee of Quang Tri Province. A newly issued document outlines stringent measures for managing ships at ports, emphasizing operational efficiency and meticulous monitoring of product volumes.
Empowering Stakeholders
Recognizing the pivotal role of stakeholders, particularly fishermen and businesses, the provincial authorities have allocated resources to deploy the eCDT software across fishing ports. This deployment is poised to provide crucial support by enhancing operational transparency and accountability throughout the supply chain.
